So, since Easter is tomorrow, I took pictures of my Easter dress. And now you might be wondering "what does this have to do with saving the earth?" Well, my Easter dress is no ordinary Easter dress. Not only is made of 50% recycled cloth, but it also hand-sewn by me. This cuts pollution in three major ways.
The first way is that it is 50% recycled cloth. All the re-used cloth was cut-up T-shirts. The only cut-up T-shirt you see is the top part of the dress with the yellow and white stripes. The other ones are a bunch of white T-shirts all sewn together underneath the skirt, but I didn't have anything big enough for that outside of the skirt, so that is new material.
The second way that it is earth-friendly is that it was hand-sewn. That means there was no electrical equipment used to produce the dress -- therefore, cutting pollution, and of course, the cost. The only cost was for the yellow fabric for the skirt and the ribbon, putting the price to make the dress at about $10.
Finally, because it was made by me in my house, there was no transportation pollution. If you buy a dress at a store you probably don't know where it was made and how much pollution it made to get to the store and back to your house.
If it was made using all recycled cloth the dress would have been almost a no-pollution dress.

ReplyDeleteVery creative designing! Are the t-shirts that are underneath the skirt used to make the skirt look fuller? The dress is lovely and it sounds like you had fun making it.
ReplyDeleteTechnically, yes, the tshirts are used to make the dress look fuller. But they also serve a greater purpose. You see, the style of the dress is that the skirt doesn't end where you can see it , it tucks under and goes back up to reconnect with the beginning of the skirt. Because you don't see the part that tucks under, you can make it out of scraps.

ReplyDeleteI love this dress! Not only is the design creative, but it is also an original. You won't ever find yourself in a room with someone else wearing exactly the same dress, which would be a little bit boring.
